InfoBoard: A visual representation of news coverage
Our goal at Newz Group is to make the news that matters to you as accessible and easy to understand through media sourcing, monitoring, and visualizations. Determining how tariffs are being discussed in the news and what effect they can have on your day-to-day life can be overwhelming; using the NewsRadar, we built an InfoBoard to help illustrate real-time media trends in relation to tariff news.
The InfoBoard is a real-time, fully automated, visual tracker allowing you to see how tariffs are being discussed in the media and on social media in areas like volume, subject, sentiment, and even emoji without having to dive into the news yourself. The InfoBoard monitors the top 100 American news websites, millions of Facebook, Threads, Instagram, BlueSky, TikTok, Reddit, Mastodon, and YouTube posts, plus traditional newspapers from the state of New Mexico. For optimal viewing, we recommend using a desktop or laptop computer, not a mobile device.

In recent months, media coverage about tariffs has gone from being a niche topic in American trade publications to having the spotlight in the center stage of the mainstream media. In June of 2024, tariffs were only mentioned 12,917 times in American online news, which is just 2% of the volume of April 2025, where over 484,000 articles mentioned tariffs.
Interestingly enough, even though American tariffs are far from finalized as of May 31st, there is already an emerging downturn in how often tariff news occurs. May of 2025 had approximately 50% fewer mentions than April.

Any news related to society’s money/wallets/incomes generally elicits strong sentiment and emotion. This InfoBoard shows both social media posts and traditional media coverage’s emotions in two different ways: automatic sentiment and emojis.
Tracking what emojis and how much they are used when discussing a subject is a great way to determine how the average social media user feels. In both March and April of 2025, use of the 📈 or the ‘Chart Rising’ emoji slightly edged out the 📉 or ‘Chart Decreasing’ emoji. However, as tariff talk continued on, May of 2025 was the opposite, with the ‘Chart Decreasing’ emoji being utilized more often.
Automatic List-Based Sentiment is another great tool for gauging emotions. Every mention captured by the NewsRadar has the number of negative and positive words tallied, then a determination is made based on the totals. The InfoBoard may not be able to tell if the old adage ‘Bad News Travels Fast’ is true, but it does display that bad news does not necessarily travel farther. Which is a comfort.

Analytics like Media Topic, Popular Words, and Popular Subjects allow us to see where and how tariffs are being discussed. Although it is not surprising that ‘Economy and Finance’ is the top media topic, it is surprising that the media topic areas of both ‘Music’ and ‘Art and Culture’ are mentioning tariffs on a frequent basis.
Although we have access to online news data from across the globe with the NewsRadar, it can be refreshing to take a look at how popular news subjects are being discussed in local newspapers. For this InfoBoard we utilized data from traditional newspapers in the state of New Mexico.
When it comes to tariff coverage, New Mexico’s newspapers often take a more grounded, community-focused approach, highlighting the direct impact of tariffs on local farmers, small businesses, and other aspects of day-to-day life. This is unlike national online news, which tends to emphasize political strategy or market changes. This discussion, often involving fear of direct impact from tariffs, is more than likely why the automatic sentiment in the newspaper coverage captured trends more negative than online news coverage.
